Description

Bring the rustic flavors of Ireland into your kitchen with this Authentic Irish Soda Bread. Quick and simple, this hearty bread features a golden crust and tender crumb, perfect for pairing with soups, stews, or simply enjoying with butter and jam. No yeast, no proofing—just delicious homemade bread in under an hour.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 4 cups (560g)
  • Salt: 1 ½ teaspoons
  • Baking soda: 1 ¼ teaspoons
  • Buttermilk: 2 cups

Instructions

 Preheat and Prepare

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Dust a baking sheet lightly with flour or line it with parchment paper.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda until evenly distributed.

3. Add the Buttermilk

  1. Gradually pour the buttermilk into the dry mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands.
  2. Mix just until the dough comes together; it should be slightly sticky but not overly wet.

4. Shape the Dough

  1. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  2. Gently shape it into a round loaf. Avoid kneading to maintain a tender crumb.

5. Score the Dough

  1. Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Use a sharp knife to cut a cross about ½ inch deep across the top of the loaf.

6. Bake the Bread

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes at 425°F.
  2. Reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for 35-40 minutes.
  3. The bread is done when the crust is golden brown, and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

7. Cool and Serve

  • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For added flavor, sprinkle a small amount of flour on top of the loaf before baking for a rustic look.
  • This bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a crisp crust.
