Method
Preheat and Prepare
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Dust a baking sheet lightly with flour or line it with parchment paper.
2. Mix the Dry Ingredients
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda until evenly distributed.
3. Add the Buttermilk
- Gradually pour the buttermilk into the dry mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands.
- Mix just until the dough comes together; it should be slightly sticky but not overly wet.
4. Shape the Dough
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Gently shape it into a round loaf. Avoid kneading to maintain a tender crumb.
5. Score the Dough
- Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Use a sharp knife to cut a cross about ½ inch deep across the top of the loaf.
6. Bake the Bread
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes at 425°F.
- Reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for 35-40 minutes.
- The bread is done when the crust is golden brown, and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
7. Cool and Serve
- Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For added flavor, sprinkle a small amount of flour on top of the loaf before baking for a rustic look.
- This bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a crisp crust.
