Ingredients

Dough
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Can try a gluten-free blend for dietary needs
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar Substitute with brown sugar for deeper flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor in the dough
  • 1 cup Butter (cold) Essential for flaky layers
  • 1 packet Active Dry Yeast Ensure it’s fresh for optimal results
  • 1 cup Warm Milk Almond milk works well for a dairy-free version
  • 1 large Egg For an egg-free option, use flaxseed or aquafaba
Filling
  • 1 can Apple Pie Filling Store-bought is acceptable
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Optional, can use nutmeg for alternative warmth
Glaze
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Can replace with almond extract for a unique twist
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar Creates a smooth texture ideal for drizzling

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking Sheet
  • parchment paper

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, mix warm milk with active dry yeast and let it sit until bubbly. Add this mixture and an egg to the flour mixture, stirring until a dough forms. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
Shape the Kringle
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the dough into a large rectangle, about ¼ inch thick. Place the apple pie filling in the center. Fold the long sides over the filling, creating a loose oval shape. Seal the ends gently.
Bake the Kringle
  1. Transfer the shaped Kringle onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top with an egg wash and bake for approximately 25 minutes until golden brown.
Add Glaze
  1. Once out of the oven and cooled for 10 minutes, combine powdered sugar and vanilla extract with water or milk until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm Kringle.

Notes

Ensure your butter is cold for maximum flakiness. Watch the filling to avoid leaks during baking. Brush with an egg wash for a shiny golden crust. Allowing the dough to chill enhances flavor and texture.
