Method
Prepare the Bread:
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange slices of French bread in a snug, single layer.
Mix the Custard:
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring each slice is well-soaked.
Refrigerate Overnight:
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Caramel Sauce:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat.
Assemble and Bake:
- Pour the caramel sauce evenly over the soaked bread.
- Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed and the caramel is bubbling.
Serve:
- Let the dish cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
- Serve warm with fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
Notes
- Bread Choices: Brioche, challah, or sourdough work well in place of French bread.
- Make It Ahead: While overnight refrigeration is best, you can let the bread soak for at least 1 hour if short on time.
- Custom Flavors: Add a pinch of nutmeg or almond extract for a unique twist.
