Ingredients

  • 1 pound dry macaroni pasta
  • 8 tablespoons butter 1 stick
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups Half and Half
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried mustard
  • 3 cups Sharp Cheddar cheese shredded
  • 2 cups Gruyere cheese shredded
  • 1 cup White Cheddar cheese shredded
Topping Ingredients:
  • ½ cup panko
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt

Method

  1. Cook the Pasta: Cook the macaroni according to package instructions in salted boiling water until al dente (7-8 minutes). Drain and set aside, tossing with a little olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk until bubbly, about 1-2 minutes. Gradually add milk and Half and Half, whisking constantly until smooth and thickened. Stir in pepper, nutmeg, garlic powder, and dried mustard. Add shredded cheeses and stir until melted and smooth.
  3. Combine Pasta and Sauce: Stir the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until fully coated.
  4. Prepare the Topping: Mix panko, melted butter, and seasoned salt in a small bowl until evenly coated.
  5. Bake: Transfer the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the panko topping over the top. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Cheese Choices: Customize the flavors with your favorite cheeses, like Monterey Jack, Gouda, or even a hint of blue cheese.
  • Texture Tips: For a creamier sauce, whisk continuously and gradually add liquids. If the sauce thickens too much, add more milk for the perfect consistency.
  • Make It Your Own: Feel free to mix in bacon, sautéed vegetables, or jalapeños for added flavor.
