Ingredients
  

For the Marinade
  • 1 block Extra Firm Tofu Freeze before use for best texture.
  • 1 cup Vegan Chicken Broth
  • 1 cup Soy Milk Or any plant-based milk.
  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Hot Sauce Adjust to spice preference.
For the Breading
  • 1 cup Flour Can be swapped with gluten-free flour.
  • 0.5 cup Cornstarch Can be replaced with potato starch.
  • 0.5 cup Cornmeal Adds texture.
  • 1 tbsp Oregano Or Italian seasoning mix.
  • 1 tbsp Creole Seasoning Can replace with cayenne pepper and salt.
  • 1 ts Garlic Powder
  • 1 ts Onion Powder
  • 1 ts Paprika
  • 0.5 ts Black Pepper
  • 0.5 ts White Pepper
For Cooking
  • 2 cups Oil Enough for frying.

Equipment

  • Deep fryer or heavy skillet
  • Tofu press
  • Thermometer

Method
 

Prepare Tofu
  1. Start by freezing a block of extra firm tofu for 24 hours. Once frozen, transfer it to the fridge and let it thaw overnight. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture.
Marinate Tofu
  1. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes, then immerse them in vegan chicken broth for at least 15 minutes.
Make Buttermilk
  1. In a bowl, combine soy milk, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
Prepare Breading
  1. Mix flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, oregano, creole seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and white pepper in a bowl.
Heat Oil
  1. Heat oil to 370°F (187°C) in a deep fryer or a heavy skillet.
Coat Tofu
  1. Dip each tofu cube into the buttermilk mixture, then roll it in the breading mixture to coat thoroughly.
Fry Tofu
  1. Carefully place the breaded tofu nuggets into the hot oil and fry for 3-4 minutes.
