Ingredients

For the Cookie Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Provides structure and stability; no direct substitution advised.
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking soda Acts as a leavening agent; can replace with baking powder (1½ teaspoons) if needed.
  • 0.75 teaspoons salt Enhances overall flavors; feel free to use sea salt or kosher salt.
  • 2 sticks butter (room temperature) Adds richness; unsalted is best.
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar Sweetens and improves browning; can partially replace with brown sugar.
  • 0.25 cups packed brown sugar Injects moisture and depth; more white sugar can work as an alternative.
  • 1 large egg Binds ingredients and aids in moisture; a flax egg can substitute for vegan option.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Contributes warmth and sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract Lends a nutty note; may be omitted.
  • 2 tablespoons water Provides moisture; milk can be used for richer flavor.
  • 0.5-0.75 cups jimmies sprinkles Avoid nonpareils as they bleed color.

  • Stand Mixer
  • baking sheets
  • parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line three baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt; whisk until evenly mixed.
  3. In a stand mixer, beat the butter until fluffy, then gradually add granulated and brown sugars until well combined.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, and water to the butter mixture; mix on low until just blended.
  5. Slowly incorporate the flour mixture into the wet ingredients, avoiding overmixing. Fold in jimmies sprinkles.
  6. Scoop out ⅓ cup of dough, roll into balls, and place on the prepared baking sheets. Freeze for 15 minutes.
  7. Bake for about 10 minutes, then bang the baking sheet against the oven rack to create crinkles. Repeat every few minutes.
  8. Remove from oven, let cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
