Description
Jamaican Beef Patties are a delicious and savory pastry filled with seasoned ground beef, perfect for a snack or meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
- 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the thyme, paprika, allspice, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Mix well and cook for another minute.
- Pour in the beef broth and stir in the breadcrumbs. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Roll out the pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Cut out circles using a 5-inch round cutter.
- Place about 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the crust over to create a half-moon shape and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños to the beef mixture.
- You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- Serve with a side of mango salsa for a refreshing contrast.
