Description

A cozy one-skillet dinner packed with flavor—this creamy ground beef orzo is simmered in a rich tomato cream sauce and finished with fresh basil. Hearty, comforting, and ready in under 30 minutes!

Ingredients

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1½ tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup orzo pasta
1 can (14.5 oz) crushed tomatoes
2 cups beef broth
¼ cup heavy cream Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  • Sauté aromatics:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

  • Brown the beef:
Add ground beef to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Stir in dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and tomato paste. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the tomato paste darkens slightly.

  • Add pasta and liquids:
Stir in orzo, crushed tomatoes, and beef broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer.

  • Simmer until tender:
Let it cook uncovered for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.

  • Finish with cream:
Stir in the heavy cream and cook for 1–2 more minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

  • Serve:
Garnish with chopped fresh basil and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • Make it spicy by increasing the red pepper flakes.

  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version.

  • Add a handful of baby spinach in the last 2 minutes of cooking for extra greens.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat with a splash of broth or cream to loosen the sauce.
