Description

This Creamed Chipped Beef recipe is a nostalgic comfort dish made with tender strips of dried beef in a rich, creamy white gravy. Perfect over toast, rice, or biscuits, it’s a simple and satisfying meal ready in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

8 ounces sliced dried beef (such as Buddig, about 4 packets)
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 to cups milk, slightly warmed
⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
Black pepper, to taste
Salt, optional (depending on saltiness of the beef)
Toast, rice, or biscuits, for serving

Instructions

  • Slice the beef into ½-inch wide strips, then cut into 1-inch pieces. Set aside.

  • In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add flour and stir constantly for 1 to 2 minutes to form a smooth paste—do not let it brown.

  • Slowly whisk in 2 cups of warm milk until smooth. Add garlic powder and black pepper.

  • Stir continuously as the sauce begins to thicken and bubble, about 2 to 3 minutes.

  • Add the sliced beef and continue cooking for another 2 minutes until heated through.

  • Adjust consistency with more milk if needed. Season with additional salt or pepper to taste.

  • Serve hot over toast, biscuits, mashed potatoes, or rice.

Notes

This recipe is traditionally served over toast, but it’s also delicious over mashed potatoes or egg noodles. If using highly salted beef, soak it briefly in warm water and pat dry before using. For a richer flavor, substitute part of the milk with cream.
